Hi Missy,

Your workshop at "Knowledge, Strength & Grace" was terrific! I was one of the women who went to it. I feel positively liberated by what I learned! You turned my attitude around, from feeling that I had to put up with things the way they were to knowing I have the capacity to improve my pelvic health and strength. Also, the workshop was fun -- your upbeat attitude and sense of humor are big plusses.

I was talking about the workshop to other women afterwards and they said they wished they'd attended. Some women hadn't realized how far beyond the Kegel exercises your program goes. As I said in my feedback sheet for "KS&G," I hope you offer the workshop again next year.

Thanks for all you've done for us,

Beth P.

Missy,

Love your blog! Curious to see the documentary. To share a little about my scars, I went through a windshield head first from the back seat of a car when I was 14. After 175 stitches on my face, you could imagine what that can do to the self esteem of a teenage girl. I saw the movie mask while I was recuperating (remember Cher?) and was so moved by the main character. I remember thinking that people had been staring at him his entire life like he was a monster. I got just a glimpse of what it must have felt like to be him when people would gasp when they saw my stitches and cuts.

I see my scars everyday when I look in the mirror, but most people never see them. Every now and again a small child will put their finger on my forehead and ask what happened. I smile and tell them to always were their seat-belt.

See you Sat,

Jeni

Hi Donna,

Me, too! It probably fits "differently" with us because of the lack of a cervix. Getting one was my idea - like so many things in the care model of this condition (and many others), you have to be your own champion.

I just felt that given the lack of support inside there and my burning desire to keep doing ridiculously high impact sports (running), it might be a good idea to have one. When I asked my doctor, she seemed to think it made sense; it does fit and my is an incontinence specific one - it has a little knob that presses against the urethra.

So all I can tell you is ask the question! Again, they are not expensive and if probably fitted (you must be fitted by a healthcare practitioner and know that they come in a MYRIAD of sizes and shapes!), maybe it will be the little "lift" you need:-) Or, maybe the little extra "squeeze" you need.

That said, KEEP UP YOUR TOTAL CONTROL EXERCISES! You still have to take care of the supporting structures that lie underneath it all. Very soon, we are going to have a handy little tool available via our website that you can download to your computer to help you remember to do your exercises. Stay tuned for the "widget"!

Yours in pelvic health,
Missy

I have had a total hysterectomy including the cervix. I can not picture how the pessary would be in position from the illustation you gave. I typically do not have incontinence problems, however, I have had a cold since January 23 and I think my body is about to give up on me because I am suddenly leaking when I have these awful coughing fits. I am sure my bladder is just plain exausted, so am I, but I do want to fix this before it continues. I do have your DVD and the ball, but have not been faithful in using it since I did not seem to have a real problem until the last several days. But I was curious about the fit of the pessary after a radical hysterectomy.

Edie,

I love your question about why don't we make it a priority? How can it NOT be a priority when issues "down there" ruin our quality of life? It is mind boggling.

Only by changing the consciousness of many, like with many other causes, can we be truly revolutionary in our thoughts about pelvic health. We're goign to get there.....just at this point it's "one pelvic floor at a time." And that's OK.

I think the key is talking about "leaking" when we run, sneeze, etc. Not using the word "incontinence" until deeper in our conversations.

Incontinence is icky, like wearing "Depends." That's for "old people." But really, it's not just old people as many of us know.

It's also not a priority. Even for people like me who are far enough gone to be making it one. Why don't we make it a priority? Not sure I have the answers.

Jessica,
I checked out this site after meeting an instructor of the Total Control classes. We were just talking about our jobs and she explained the class. I had never considered that I was a "leaker" but when I sneeze and cough, I have a hard time holding it all in. I'm interested in this class now, for what it could do for me currently and what it could do for me in the future!
